We love the film Vanishing Point at CCC. We think it could well be the ultimate road movie. Most of you we’re sure will have seen it, if not get out there and watch it!
Kowalski (Barry Newman) is the protagonist of this tremendous movie. He is a Vietnam veteran and former motorbike and car racer and dishonourably discharged policeman (yes he’s been a busy guy) and is on assignment to deliver a Dodge Challenger R/T 440 Magnum from Denver to San Francisco. What follows is an incredibly stylish amphetamine fuelled adventure of epic proportions all narrated by one of the coolest characters ever to grace the silver screen – KOW DJ, Super Soul (Cleavon Little). Writer G. Cabrera Infante modelled the character of Super Soul on legendary rock and roll singer and DJ The Big Bopper and the story is based on two actual events in San Diego, California.
We’re not the only people that Vanishing Point had a big effect on either: Primal Scream’s 1997 eponymously named album is inspired by the film and was intended, when written, to be an alternative soundtrack to the film.
This review on Rotten Tomatoes sums it up nicely: “In a time when vacant retreads such as The Fast and the Furious are the problem, Vanishing Point is the answer”
